I came to Pima Medical Institute right out of high school looking for a career in the medical field. After researching a few different programs, I spoke with the director of PMI's newest program, Surgical Technology, and decided to enroll. The program was both challenging and fun. I found the instructors to be very well-trained, knowledgeable, and helpful.
My role in surgery is to scrub in, prepare my cart with the specific items needed for a particular surgery, scrub in again, open everything, and organize my table. Everything on that table is mine and totally my responsibility. Once the patient is brought into the room, I may help prep and drape the patient, and once the surgery begins, I assist the surgeon. I'm like the right-hand-man to the surgeon, attempting to give him what he needs before he may even know he needs it.
I am grateful PMI placed me in a prestigious hospital for my clinical site because the experience enabled me to get a job quite quickly. I am currently working at a plastic surgery center. My goal down the road is to get back to a hospital setting where I can work with the da Vinci surgery robot, something I find fascinating. When I first walked through the doors of Pima Medical Institute, life was a challenge! My husband was out of work, and we, along with our six-month-old baby, were living with his mother. Plus, I had dropped out of school at 5th grade and since my mother wasn't familiar with homeschooling, I taught myself at home through high school. Today, after completing four programs, we own a beautiful home, and our now eight-year-old daughter is thriving. Our lives have completely transformed. I'm a 5th grade dropout with a master's degree - nothing is impossible if you really want it.
I began with the nine-month Medical Assistant (MA) program. Balancing full-time work and school was tough-I cried many times on my drive to class-but I never gave up. I was determined to build a better life for my family. That determination drove me to continue my education, earning my associate degree in Health Care Administration (HCA), a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration (BSHCA), and eventually a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL).
Throughout this journey, I've worked and gone to school simultaneously. Thanks to the education and skills I gained at Pima Medical, I've never struggled to find opportunities. In fact, I've had the privilege of being selective about my career path. I've grown from being an MA to a referral coordinator, and now, I'm in my first management position-a role I secured a month before earning my master's degree. Each program at Pima Medical played a crucial role in my career progression. My master's degree, in particular, has been invaluable. As a clinic manager building a new practice from scratch, I've relied on the knowledge I gained every step of the way.
Thank you, Pima Medical Institute, for changing my life and helping me achieve my dreams. If only my first instructor, Ms. Lakeeta Garfield, could see me now. So often her words - "Be thorough," have run through my mind. I have strived to be thorough in everything I do and I have been successful.

I was born in Miami to immigrant parents from Cuba, and I travelled to Las Vegas with my mother when I was 14. Unfortunately, being a single mother with an adolescent daughter was taking a financial toll on my mother, so I dropped out of high school when I was 17 to work two full-time jobs, as a face painter at Circus Circus Casino and as a retail cashier. I later obtained my G.E.D. and decided that a career working with animals was for me.
I enrolled in PMI's Veterinary Assistant Program in 2004, and I graduated with honors. Finding satisfaction working with animals prompted me to continue my education when PMI started their Veterinary Technician Program and I returned. After graduation, I sat for the Veterinary Technician National Examination and passed with a score in the top 10% in the nation.
Academic success and shelter experience led to a position at the Las Vegas Emergency Hospital where I was promoted to technician supervisor and the mainstay veterinary emergency nurse. I am currently working on a dual degree in Environmental Science/Chemistry at UNLV.
Without the support of parents or siblings, I learned early in life to set goals and obtain them with hard work in everything I do. I really value the experience of my education from Pima Medical Institute and I know the faculty of the PMI Veterinary Technology Program is proud of me!

When I was young, I had a babysitter who became a nurse. Ever since then, I've always wanted be a part of the medical field. I completed a year of general education college classes, but was unsure of my direction. We had a family friend who was a manager at a family practice and she said, "Go to Pima Medical Institute - they have a great Medical Assistant program and you'll get hired immediately." So, I took her advice and enrolled.
I had a great experience as a student and was hired at my externship site. I spent 26 years in the clinical setting. Eventually, a PMI instructor recruited me to teach. I love being back at PMI in the front of the classroom. I tell my students that I was once in their chairs and I remember being terrified of blood draws and injections. I love spending 18 weeks with students watching them change from shy and timid to excited and confident about their skills and new opportunities.
I'm often asked if I miss the clinic setting and if I want to go back. I always say - "No". I love teaching and I love the environment at PMI. I have great support from the administration and instructors from all programs. We help each other adapt our teaching style for the needs of students and we all have the same goal, which is to help our students become successful. I would never have guessed I would be back at PMI and enjoying teaching as much as I do.

I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with my life. I began working as a CNA, and through my experiences in the hospital, I became excited about a possible career in the medical field. I heard a commercial about Pima Medical Institute and decided the quickest way into a career was enrolling in their 9 month Medical Assistant program. That opened the door for me, but I loved learning and knew I wanted more.
My dad passed away in 2015 from a drowning incident and that experience pushed me toward the respiratory therapy field. Through that incident I was able to observe the amazing work that respiratory therapists do and I said to myself, "I want to be one of them". One year after completing the MA program, I started Pima Medical's Respiratory Therapy program and I loved every moment of it! The program was challenging, but our classes were small and I connected with my classmates. We developed an almost family-type relationship. I loved my instructors; they really wanted us to succeed.
After completing my clinical experience, I was hired at St Anthony North Medical Health Center in Westminster, CO. I love my job! Recently, I have been working in the COVID ICU. I help intubate, manage ventilators and endotracheal tubes and give breathing treatments to those struggling to breath. I feel like I have found my calling.
I love Pima Medical. They did so much for me. Down the road I hope to continue my education by getting my bachelor's degree and possibly even obtaining my master's degree in the respiratory field.

I have been a Medical Assistant for almost 10 years and I love it! How did I get here? One day my aunt asked me to google a medical question for her. I found her answer in minutes, but I was fascinated reading about the body and how it functioned and got distracted for over an hour. That was the day I began considering a career in the medical field. Not long after, I saw a commercial for Pima Medical Institute and enrolled in their Medical Assistant program. While figuring out my financial aid, I learned it might be helpful if others from my family were in college. I went home and asked my sister if she wanted to do the MA program with me and she said, "OK!" We worked side by side throughout the program, pushed each other and both graduated with honors!
I had an amazing experience at Pima Medical! The teachers were phenomenal! Some of them were tough, but I learned so much and felt 100% prepared for my career in the medical field. I have worked for several companies and have been a Lead MA at three different locations. I really enjoy training new MA's; in fact I have trained over 15 MAs from Pima Medical. I'm currently enjoying working at a testing center where there is lots of variety and I get to meet different patients every day.
I am so glad I found this rewarding career. I recommend Pima Medical all the time because they provide the one-on-one instruction students need to be successful. There are days I feel like I use every single skill I learned at Pima Medical. I love my job and the satisfactory feeling I get from helping others!

I worked in the airline industry for a number of years and more recently, I was a volunteer firefighter and EMT. I've always been interested in the medical field, so after an injury left me unable to continue my current work, I chose to enroll in Pima Medical Institute's Medical Assistant (MA) program. After being out of school for so long, the first day felt quite nerve-wracking. But all of my instructors were great and I felt good doing something I really wanted to do.
My externship experience was in a very fast-paced environment but I felt very well prepared. When I was ready to find a job, I saw an opportunity on a jobs website for a Kidney doctor located just six blocks from my house. I applied and they offered me a full-time position. I'm able to walk to work every day and save lots of money on gas. Most importantly, I really enjoy my new job. It is a slower paced site with returning patients and the thing I enjoy most is spending time with my patients and getting to know them.
I am happy and I appreciate coming to a job I like, rather than a job I have to go to. It makes all the difference in the world. Pima Medical Institute is one of the best decisions I've ever made. It's been a life altering experience and I'm so glad I did it. It has completely changed my life.

My story is a bit unique in the way I came to Pima Medical Institute. I was in the Nursing Assistant (CNA) program at Brightwood College in 2018 when it suddenly closed its doors. Pima Medical was willing to take those displaced students, so without other options I decided to give it a go. Since Pima Medical didn't have a CNA program, I chose their Medical Assistant (MA) program.
My experience at Pima Medical was exceptional! I had great instructors and I felt like I got a fantastic education. One specific thing I really appreciated about the curriculum was that we were able to learn all different aspects of the roles of our profession. For example, although I've never worked as a front office MA, I was able to learn those roles and understand their responsibilities as well.
Two days after finishing my program, I was on a plane moving to Colorado. I began applying for jobs as soon as I got settled and had no trouble finding a position. I was hired as an MA at Pueblo Community Health Center where I will soon be celebrating five years. Currently, I am also completing prerequisites so I can go back to school to achieve my dream of becoming an RN.
Pima Medical Institute has great programs and amazing instructors! I would highly recommend them to anyone wanting a career in the medical field. If their location here in Colorado offered an RN program, I would already be signed up. I appreciate everything all of my instructors did for me and I wouldn't be where I am without them.

In 2005, while browsing technical programs online, Pima Medical Institute's Veterinary Assistant (VA) Program caught my eye. I filled out a request for more information and, to my surprise, Niki Riggleman, a recently retired yet highly esteemed instructor, called me immediately. Despite never having had an interest in veterinary medicine before, that call changed my life. I can't imagine being in any other field today and I'm so grateful Niki called me!
I completed the VA Program and returned to complete the Veterinary Technician (VT) Program in 2007. It was a privilege to be part of the very first VT class at the Seattle Campus. One aspect of Pima Medical I truly appreciated was its accessibility; the ability to attend night classes and work during the day allowed me to maintain a steady income while pursuing my education. The hands-on classroom experience, combined with working in the field, was crucial to my professional growth.
My journey with VCA Animal Hospitals began with my first externship, where I was hired even before completing it. Almost 20 years later, I'm still with VCA and grateful to have found my place there. I worked as a VA, a VT and then quickly moved up to Technician Supervisor and a regional training role. In 2020, I became the Regional Technician Director for the Northwest & Hawaii Group, supporting veterinary teams across five states. Additionally, as the current President of the Washington State Association of Veterinary Technicians (WSAVT) and a former District Chair for the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), I am dedicated to improving the careers of Veterinary Technicians and Assistants. Ensuring their optimal utilization and safety is crucial to our profession, helping us continue to serve our patients effectively.

When I got braces in high school, I was fascinated by how something so simple could transform a person's smile-and their confidence. That experience sparked my interest in the dental field, and after researching options, I found Pima Medical Institute's Dental Assistant (DA) program. I enrolled right after high school and jumped into the program.
My instructors were incredible! I never considered myself a standout student, but the hands-on learning style was perfect for me. I learned so much, and when it came time for my externship, it felt like a breeze because I was so prepared. They even offered me a job as soon as I finished, and I worked there happily until I moved out of state.
Since graduating in 2011, I've worked in every part of a dental office-from assisting to managing the front desk to being an office manager. Today, I'm a mom of two fast-growing kids, and I want more flexibility to be with them, so I'm going back to school for billing and coding. This will allow me to continue working in the dental field from home.
I love the dental field because I get to make a difference-helping patients find relief from pain or transforming their smiles - and I'm excited about the next chapter in my dental career. Pima Medical is an amazing place with caring instructors and I would choose it all over again. It's changed my life.

After graduating from high school in Rio Rico, I moved to Tucson to attend a community college, but it just wasn't the right place for me. One of my friends had gone to Pima Medical Institute, and after checking out their Medical Assistant (MA) program, I thought-this is perfect! The program was fast, flexible, and had no wasted classes. Since there were options for morning, afternoon or evening classes, I was able to continue working while attending school. At just 19 years of age, I graduated with my certificate and started working in a "grown up job" while most of my friends were still in college. I knew I had made the right choice. I landed a job at Catalina Pediatrics where I worked as an MA for 13 years, eventually becoming the back-office manager.
Wanting more, I considered nursing, but a co-worker suggested I look into Respiratory Therapy (RT). When I found out Pima Medical had an RT program, I knew it was for me. The classes were challenging, but my instructors were supportive, and my classmates and I helped each other through the program. The biggest challenge I faced was during my ICU rotation, when COVID hit and we were sent home. After graduating, I saw a job opening at Banner Main as Program Manager for their Sleep Research Lab. I applied, and got the job! It was a tough first year learning the ins and outs of research, but now I love the responsibility and even the pressure.
If I hadn't gone back to school for RT, I wouldn't be where I am today, with a job I love. My advice? Whether you're 19 or 39, go to school. Pima Medical gave me opportunities I never imagined, and it can do the same for you!

After high school, I spent four years juggling two jobs-one at Office Max and the other at a bakery-when one day, my aunt called and asked if I wanted to go back to school with her. I had no idea what she meant, but I agreed. That's how I found Pima Medical Institute. I chose the Medical Assistant (MA) program because, when my dad was ill, I saw firsthand the impact healthcare professionals can have on a person's life. I wanted to do that too, and the program was only nine months long, which made it a perfect fit for me.
I loved every minute of the MA program! The hands-on training felt so different from high school, and I found myself excited to learn. In particular, I discovered I had a passion for injections and blood draws. When it was time for my externship, I was nervous, but my head MA was incredibly supportive, and I quickly found that it all came naturally to me.
Toward the end of the program our homework assignment was to apply for three MA positions. Afterwards, I didn't think much about it, but to my surprise, Saguaro Dermatology called and hired me. Dermatology is fast-paced and challenging, but I love it. My favorite part is working with skin cancers and assisting in surgeries. I also enjoy my role in the lab, processing tissue samples as a histotech.
Since relocating to Tucson, I easily found another dermatology position, and I couldn't be happier. Pima Medical set me on a path I'm truly passionate about, and I'd do it all over again. If you're thinking about a medical career, don't hesitate-come to Pima Medical. You won't regret it!
