I was exposed to the Physical Therapist Assistant field after my divorce when I worked at a therapeutic horse ranch. Later, when I began really researching careers that might be a fit for me, my search led me to the PTA field. I wanted a career in the medical field that was active and had a hands-on type of relationship with people. I wanted a school with a good reputation and one that provided support. That's what made me choose Pima Medical Institute.
During my first semester, I had to drop out because of my struggle with Anatomy and Physiology. But, the awesome staff at PMI met with me, they heard my heart, and encouraged me to reapply and I was accepted into a new class. Since I live an hour and a half drive from school, I was able to rely on my community to help with my children. It strengthened my faith and also taught me to rely on my classmates to help me study and learn. It was an amazing experience!
I am currently working for Columbine Health Systems, where I had completed my clinicals as a student. I work at all 5 of their skilled nursing facilities. I love my job! I feel like I'm able to talk to the geriatric population in a way that helps them understand the reason behind why their physical therapy is important and how it can improve their quality of life. I carry the education and confidence PMI gave me each time I walk into a treatment room. I am so proud to be a PMI graduate.

My journey with Pima Medical Institute began unexpectedly while working at Chipotle to fund my dream of attending Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) school. A co-worker there who was attending Pima Medical told me about the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program. I had never heard of a PTA before, but I was intrigued and secured an interview the following week and was accepted into the program in early 2012. The deciding factors were the program's affordability and the expedited entry into a career in the medical field.
The PTA program proved demanding, surpassing the rigor of my previous bachelor's degree. Juggling a full-time job alongside the intensive program was challenging, but I knew I had to take my school work seriously in order to be successful in my new career. One thing I appreciated was how dedicated the instructor team was at helping each student be successful. The supportive environment allowed for unlimited questions and open hours on non-class days, facilitating additional preparation for exams.
I secured my first job with Children's Hospital Colorado, despite the advertised requirement of three years of experience. Since 2014, I have been dedicated to Inpatient Rehab Physical Therapist at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. I have also had the privilege of being a Colorado State Physical Therapy Board member since 2019, serving as Vice President for three years (2020, 2021, 2024). Additionally, I contribute to the Advisory Board for Pima Medical's PTA program at the Denver Campus.
My gratitude to my former instructors knows no bounds. Their support, starting from granting me a chance, has been unwavering even a decade after completing the program. I whole heartedly endorse Pima Medical Institute, confident in the transformative journey it offers to aspiring health professionals.

At the age of 44 I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I went through two difficult years of being very sick and spending time in and out of the hospital. After several operations, I was told if the chemo didn't work, I had six months to live. I was sent to a grief counselor who asked me, "If you could do life all over again, what is one thing you would change or do over?"
I told her that I would have dedicated my life to helping animals and the people who love them. Prior to my cancer, I had been working and making decent money, but without meaning. I was left feeling empty.
The chemo worked, and I started PMI's Veterinary Assistant Program. What a challenge! Being around all the younger students was intimidating. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to keep up with the fast pace learning after so many years of not being in school. However, my classmates turned out to be some of my best friends! The instructors were fantastic! They were tough, but cared about me. I found my dream job through my PMI's externship program. I'm blessed to be working at VCA Hualapai Animal Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada as a Veterinary Assistant. I am planning to become a Vet Tech next.
If Dr. Mayer, or any of my PMI instructors were standing in front of me at this moment, I would probably break down, hug them and say THANK YOU for helping me achieve my dream. No more regrets for me!

After high school I got my bachelor's degree in social work and began working in hospitals, nursing homes, and group homes. I was always in the health care arena. In fact, I started as a candy stripper at a local hospital while in high school! After a number of years in social work, I began having children and I chose to stay home with them for 10 years. While considering returning to work, I had an MRI and I began looking into radiology. While the local community college had a 5 year wait, I was able to start the Radiography program at Pima Medical Institute immediately.
I loved being a student at PMI. It was a tough program but my classmates and I helped each other through and we're still friends today. During my last rotation at Banner UMC I was offered a position as a radiography technician and I worked there for 5 years. It was an exciting place to work and I obtained a wealth of experience. As I was beginning to consider moving into a teaching role, I heard PMI was looking for an instructor. Becoming an instructor at PMI, and now a Clinical Director, enables me to still be involved in a type of social work, but with a very, very positive spin. I get to watch our students mature and grow professionally. I have so much admiration for some of my students who courageously overcome huge obstacles to complete this program.
I've worked for a number of companies, but I've never worked for a better company than Pima Medical Institute. Having graduated from PMI and now teaching here, I understand the caring culture and I'm able to carry that forward and that's important. I love seeing my former students out at the hospitals and hearing how happy they are in their profession. Plus, now I get to watch them take care of our current clinical students. I love my job! I didn't graduate from high school. I got married, had four children, and worked at restaurants. 11 years after quitting school, I decided to continue my education, and a week after earning my GED, I stopped in at PMI and signed up for the Pharmacy Technician program. I didn't have a vehicle, so I walked a mile and a half every day to class and back, only missing one day of school.
I loved my classes! They flew by so quickly, but I dedicated myself to learning all I could. My instructors taught more than simple book learning; they taught us what they had learned out in the field. We were trained in what would be expected of us and even role-played, practicing how to handle patients in specific situations.
I was hired at my externship site where I am now the IV Technician, dispensing medications for a long- term care facility, hospice and assisted living. Some days are rough, but I know that what I'm doing is beneficial both to myself and to my patients. Because I want to show my children the importance of life-long learning, I plan to continue my education through PMI's online Health Care Administration program.
I'm really grateful I stepped out of my comfort zone and took the risk to create something different for myself and for my children. I graduated with honors, and my family couldn't be more proud of me. I'm so grateful for the opportunity PMI has given me. It has changed my life.

As a small child I was obsessed with watching medical shows. I told my dad I wanted to be a nurse and I never changed my mind! I knew Pima Medical Institute had a great reputation so I enrolled in the Associate's degree in Nursing (ADN) at their Mesa Campus. I had a great experience and loved my instructors and, even though it's very uncommon to admit, I actually miss nursing school! It was a challenging time for me as I logged over 45 flights back and forth to San Diego during my program to help care for my husband's grandfather who was on hospice. But, my instructors were great and helped me succeed.
I've always loved children, so I combined my two passions and landed a job working in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Shortly after landing my dream job and enrolling in Pima Medical's Bachelor of Science in Nursing's (BSN) online program, we received the wonderful news that we were expecting a baby boy. I found myself writing discussion boards while in labor in my hospital bed. Although it was challenging working full-time, raising a newborn and going to school, the online classes maintained enough organization and a steady pace to encourage me to keep going and graduate on time.
I get questions daily from people interested in a nursing program. I've always told them the truth - if you want a solid education that prepares you for the world of nursing, Pima Medical is the best option. The clinical sites are unmatched, the staff will do anything to help you succeed and there is nothing that isn't covered in the 20 month program that you will need to start your nursing career.

In 2012 I was in a bad accident and spent time in the hospital. This experience enabled me to observe the nurses and see how they cared for people. I had been working as a team lead at Target for a number of years but I decided that I wanted to do more than help people spend money, so I began pursuing the medical field. I started as a CNA and after 4 years decided I wanted to attend school to become an LPN.
I heard about Pima Medical Institute on the radio and got excited about attending their Practical Nursing program. I have to admit my first sequence of classes was really challenging! The whole program was a huge learning experience for me, but my hard work paid off. I appreciated how the whole program was laid out ahead of time, including our course work and the schedule. This really helped us be successful.
I was offered a job at my clinical site. The administrator took notice of me and offered me a position as a unit manager, not your typical first job as an LPN. I believe Pima Medical helped me develop a level of confidence that made a difference in obtaining this position. Recently, I was contacted by another facility and offered a job as another unit manager. I am honored and proud that in such a short time my education and hard work has provided opportunities for growth in my career. Pima Medical prepared me to be successful. The encouragement and support I got from my instructors was just overwhelming, and it's an experience I am always going to cherish.

I began working toward a degree in biology after high school but after evaluating job opportunities, I realized I was looking for more hands on and started considering the medical field. After researching, I chose the Respiratory Therapy program at Pima Medical Institute and was able to begin within a couple weeks.
It is a very intensive program and it wasn't easy, but I found staying on top of my classwork and communicating with my instructors was the key. When it came time for clinicals, I got some great advice from a preceptor who encouraged me to jump in rather than just observe. I took this to heart and became a better therapist. I graduated in February right before the COVID pandemic. My goal upon graduation was to obtain a travel assignment and go where needed. My first travel position was in New Jersey at East Orange General Hospital and my first day I covered the ER and part of the ICU. It was overwhelming at times but I just kept remembering my instructors' words. Early on we had a patient we didn't know had COVID and as a result, nine nurses got COVID along with their family members, including several who passed away. Since then (2020) I have been on seven travel assignments in New York, Texas, Colorado, Oregon and AZ and experienced rural hospitals as well as the number one respiratory institute in the world. I've been blessed with so many opportunities and have learned so much.
Pima Medical certainly prepared me for my career. All of my instructors were really amazing! They each brought a different type of expertise and I benefited from all of them.

Back in 2016, I was doing odd jobs and struggling to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Motivated by the advice of family members who had careers in the healthcare field, I chose to pursue a Nursing Assistant (NA) program. However, relocating from New York to Arizona necessitated repeating the program to obtain the necessary certification. It was during this time that I discovered Pima Medical Institute's NA program, which proved to be an ideal fit due to their accommodating evening classes.
I had a really great experience at Pima Medical. I went in with an open mind, knowing the nursing field changes daily and there is always more to learn. Upon completion, I was offered a position as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) at Springdale Village Health Care Mesa and after only 6 months, I moved up to Director of Case Management. In this capacity, I serve as a crucial liaison between the facility, the insurance company and the patients, ensuring that proper payments align with the required level of care. Additionally, I lead our educational program. Within a very short time after becoming the Director of Case Management, I reached out to Pima Medical and established a contract for their students and currently we have 8 of their externship students learning at our facility.
Pima Medical provided me a solid foundation in the healthcare field, steering me towards a fulfilling career rather than just a job. I am paid well, have everything I need and I love my job! I enjoy making sure patients are taken care of, especially those without family. I advocate and always tell them, "I get paid to stress, you get paid to heal."

Before I joined Pima Medical Institute's Veterinary Technician (VT) program, my life was a juggling act of working three jobs, including two at veterinary hospitals and one at a fast-food restaurant. After becoming pregnant and being a single mom, I realized I needed to secure a stable future for my child. I knew I needed to pursue an education in my area of passion, veterinary medicine, so I enrolled in Pima Medical's VT program.
My experience and ongoing work in the veterinary field made my educational experience a breeze. To be able to apply the knowledge I was learning in my classes immediately was huge. I branched out to a surgery specialty hospital for my externship experience. After graduating, I worked in both general practice and emergency medicine, but the fast-paced, action-packed environment of the emergency room resonated with me. I soon found myself in a separate emergency clinic where I became supervisor of an ICU, managing a team of 20 people. I had bigger aspirations, leading me to Tennessee, where I obtained a staff manager position at a general practice until I reached my ultimate goal of a position at the top-notch University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center. I've achieved my dream job and found my true calling. I'm on a path to becoming a specialized technician in Neurology, a challenging journey that involves rigorous criteria and examinations. I recently had the honor of presenting a winning neurology case at the ACVIM conference.
Pima Medical Institute provided the foundation I needed, and from there, my career has skyrocketed. My advice to aspiring veterinary students is to apply what you learn in a clinical setting, even as a kennel assistant. Go for it! I'm proof that with determination and hard work, even a single mom can achieve her dreams.

I had a strong desire to become a nurse and was completing prerequisites at a local community college, but the two-year waitlist was too long. Thankfully, I discovered Pima Medical Institute's Phlebotomy program. It was perfect for my busy life as a mother of two. In less than three months, I graduated, secured a job in the medical field and was set up for success. Seeking more, I returned to Pima Medical and enrolled in the 22-month Respiratory Therapy (RT) program. The school's support system and faculty made it an obvious choice. I loved the RT program and was employed for years as a Respiratory Therapist in a hospital and sleep lab setting. I also worked as an autotransfusionist in the operating room.
Life took a difficult turn when my husband battled colon cancer, requiring a temporary relocation to Phoenix. During this time, I pursued my dream of a bachelor's degree in Healthcare Administration (BSHCA). When things got really tough and I wanted to quit, the program director encouraged me to keep going. Each faculty member was understanding and compassionate and I'm so grateful they pushed me to finish. My husband's health issues persisted, I knew I had to become the family's breadwinner so I finally pursued my dream and enrolled in the nursing program. Sadly, my husband passed away a month later and I had to drop out. Nearly two years later, I returned to the program and I am now a proud registered nurse (RN) at Banner Hospital. The nursing program was very challenging, but I realize now the faculty are so tough because they truly care about putting good nurses out in the field.
I recently introduced my daughter to Pima Medical. Just like I had, she took a tour, met with an advisor, received financial aid information, completed an assessment and scheduled an interview for the Radiography program. I am excited for her and confident that Pima Medical will be an amazing experience, just as it was for me.

I didn't consider becoming a nurse until I met my husband, who has been a nurse for over 25 years. When he encouraged me to go back to school, I resisted telling him, "I'm 52 years old and I don't have time to do all those prerequisites." To ease me into the healthcare world, he suggested I become a CNA (certified nursing assistant) to get some experience. After researching, he found Pima Medical Institute's 20-month Nursing program where there was no waiting list and no prerequisites. The idea of a shorter, more accessible path was very appealing, so I enrolled.
Starting the program in my 50's, I worried about fitting in with younger students. But, on my first day I got in the elevator with another new student who turned to me and said, "I want to sit next to you." We ended up becoming best friends. Also, I realized that my life experiences, while different from my younger classmates (who affectionately called me "mom"), were valuable. I felt very prepared going into clinicals and my age and maturity were assets. I was offered a position at my clinical site at Banner Heart ICU as a new graduate, a rare opportunity. I continued fine-tuning my skills in different healthcare settings and now work in the ICU at a long-term acute care center. I love my job and feel like I have found my niche.
My journey inspired my son, who recently graduated from Pima Medical's Nursing program and is working in the Neuro ICU at Banner Desert. I have become a clinical instructor for Pima Medical taking small groups of students to Banner University, where they get hands-on experience with tracheal suctioning and ventilator settings. It's a wonderful experience for them and I've found I love teaching!
My Pima Medical journey has been incredible. It's never too late to pursue a career. If I can do it, anyone can!
