While on summer break in high school, my mom encouraged me to get out of the house and do some volunteering. Through a friend, I had the opportunity to work in Tucson Medical Center's Pediatric Outpatient Clinic. I got lots of great experience but found myself drawn to the Occupational Therapy area. In fact, I ended up falling in love with it and went back every summer! After high school, I attended the University of Arizona and got my degree in psychology. While working at Encompass Health as a Rehabilitation Technician, an Occupational Therapist Assistant, who had graduated from Pima Medical Institute, encouraged me to attend their OTA Program. Coming to PMI was very different from my university experience. It was actually a million times better! I loved the small class sizes and the personal attention from the instructors. I had gotten a little lost and struggled at the university, but I did well and loved my time at Pima Medical and I felt very confident and well prepared going into my field. I currently work for the Sunnyside School District and I am an Occupational Therapist Assistant working with preschool age children with a wide range of disabilities and abilities. After I get a little more experience, I plan to go back to school to get my master's and my doctorate. Pima Medical is a place that genuinely cares about you. They prepare you and want you to do well in the career you have chosen. I love my job!

How did I go from being a single mom in high school to recently overseeing the top enrolling COVID19 vaccine trial resulting in a 94.5% efficacy rate for the biotechnology company, Moderna? Let me tell you my story. I became a single mom while in high school and was unsure of my future plans when a doctor on my coed softball team encouraged me to apply for a job at his clinic. I began as a receptionist. I loved learning new skills but without training had limited patient contact. My doctor encouraged me to get more education, so I enrolled at Pima Medical Institute's Medical Assistant program. I made some really good friends and was provided a great stepping stone into my career. After graduation I was able to work closely with patients. I saw how different medications helped them and became very interested in the different clinical trials. Again I chose to get more education, enabling me to become a certified clinical research coordinator. I've coordinated over 100 clinical trials here at Quality of Life Medical & Research Center where I am in charge of recruiting participants, coordinating staff and lab tests, collecting data and documenting each patient all while making sure they are safe. As a result of my involvement in this very significant vaccine trial, I have been promoted to Clinical Trial Research Manager, overseeing the entire team and clinical trials ... all at the very same clinic where I began as a receptionist. This trial has certainly brought my career to a new level, but it has also been very fulfilling on a personal level as we are ALL affected by this terrible pandemic. My education at Pima Medical Institute provided a foundation which I was able to build upon. My advice for young people considering a medical career is to reach for the stars! This may just be the start of your final destination. I am so proud I was able to leave behind that place in life where I didn't know what to do and now I can say, "Look what I have done ... and you can do it too!"

My dad had a bout of pneumonia and ended up on a ventilator and I was fascinated watching the respiratory therapist control my dad's breathing. I'd been working in the auto industry, never thought I was college material, but I my family believed in and motivated me to look into the field. I set up a tour of Pima Medical Institute with the program director and as I saw the facility and listened to her, I fell in love with her passion for respiratory therapy. Being a student at Pima Medical was certainly challenging for me, but the support I had from instructors and classmates was amazing. Our class decided that no one was going to fail, so when someone was struggling with a concept, we all rallied around them. The instructors were always available for extra help and by the time I got to clinicals, I really felt prepared. Prior to graduation I obtained a position with Banner South, a hospital that had been part of my community since I'd been a child. While performing bedside care as a respiratory therapist, I recognized that healthcare doesn't stop at the bedside. I became interested in looking at how, for example, a patient's social economic situation impacted their outcome. Knowing I wanted to make a bigger impact and with the confidence I gained from my time at PMI I went on and continued my education earning my bachelor's in applied management and ultimately my MBA. I navigated my way throughout the healthcare system from beside care, care coordination, to quality improvement. Wanting to be more proactive than reactive, I took a position as Senior Manager of Medicare Administration. We not only looked at how we delivered advantage plan benefits, I'm proud to say we instituted a non-traditional innovative program for our patients. Recently, I accepted a position as Director of Care Delivery Operations for Banner Health Corporate. I recognize that in order for bedside staff to offer their best care, processes and supply have to be in place. I can now play a role in making that happen and that is very exciting! Pima Medical provided the necessary educational and support a guy - who didn't think he was college material - needed in order to have the confidence to be successful. Next step - CEO!

I was planning to be a nurse when a friend encouraged me to shadow a radiologic technologist. I was able to observe lots of modalities including basic x-rays, MRI and CT scans, but fell in love with the cardiac cath lab when I watched them put in a stent from the control room. Once I learned a Radiography associate degree program and some on-the-job training was all that was required to work in a cath lab, I had my new career goal! I loved my time at Pima Medical. Soon after obtaining my first job at an urgent care, I was able to obtain a position working in the cath lab at a hospital. After a few years, I went back to Pima Medical for my Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences (RSBS.) I loved the flexibility an online program offered and much of what I learned is currently helping me in my new position. I am the Cardiac Cath Lab Associate Director at Banner University Medical Center. During COVID many of our lab employees left. This provided an opportunity for me to prove my loyalty and passion. As a result, my director requested human resources change its protocol of only hiring RNs for director positions. They changed the policy to include rad techs with me in mind. Now I have 22 direct reports and am committed to preventing staff burnout and improving our reputation. I recently reconnected with Pima Medical, visiting and speaking to students in an effort to bring in highly motivated graduates to train and fill positions in our cath lab. I got such a warm welcome coming back to Pima Medical after all these years. It was wonderful reconnecting with my former program director who is now the associate campus director. Pima Medical is where my story began. If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing!

I had been working in the medical field for 20 years, as a Medical Assistant, but I wanted more. My desire has always been to go further into nursing, but something always seemed to happen that didn't allow me to continue my education as planned. Finally, in the fall of 2021 I enrolled in the afternoon 12-month Practical Nursing program at Pima Medical Institute. My experience as a student was amazing! I loved my classmates and being a part of a cohort that worked together to the finish. I appreciated all four of my instructors who took the time to help me see past my doubt and worry and helped guide me. They showed me that even as an older student and single mother, I could be successful. As soon as I got word that I passed my National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), I hit the ground running revising my resume and putting in applications. Since then, I have been working full-time as an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) and providing for my 6-year-old daughter. I want to thank my instructors and all the whole staff at Pima Medical. They helped me pursue and continue to be an amazing healthcare provider. I felt very prepared to achieve what I had worked so hard to accomplish and I'm looking forward to continuing my education to become a Registered Nurse (RN) soon.

While initially interested in Dental Hygiene (DH), at age 18, I chose to pursue Dental Assisting (DA) instead, partly because I was hesitant to commit to a university four-year DH program. Later, as I learned about Pima Medical Institute's two-year DH program, my research told me it was highly reputable and very challenging. This both intrigued me and motivated me and I enrolled. During my third semester an unexpected pregnancy brought huge challenges. My baby son was diagnosed with gastroschisis, a high-risk condition requiring frequent medical visits and a 54-day stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Despite the challenges of being a new mother and the emotional strain of the situation, I remained determined to succeed in my studies. I studied and completed assignments while at the NICU, my son serving as my inspiration. He was a reminder of my strength and my determination to never give up on my dreams. My DA employer had been supportive and excited about my becoming a Dental Hygienist and invited me to join their team as a DH upon obtaining my license. I want to express my sincere gratitude to all of my instructors at Pima Medical for their unwavering support during my journey, especially as I navigated the challenges of my son's condition. Each instructor was incredibly helpful and supportive, always striving for my success. I am confident in the quality of education I received and would enthusiastically recommend it to others. While the program is rigorous, it is definitely achievable-I am living proof of that!

After earning a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology, I struggled to find a job and ended up in finance. When COVID hit, my new job offer was rescinded and I was forced to take a job at a grocery store bakery, far from my career goals. I kept hearing advertisements for Pima Medical Institute which piqued my interest in the medical field. This led me to enroll in their three-month Phlebotomy program, allowing me to work and study simultaneously with minimal school commitment. It was a way to dip-my-toe into the water of the medical field. The Phlebotomy program was a turning point in my life. Small classes, hands-on experience, and an excellent instructor, Miss Denise, made a significant impact. I soon secured a position at Chandler Regional Hospital, where I interacted with various departments and realized my passion for patient care. Nursing stood out as the most versatile and impactful role, prompting me to pursue a nursing degree at the institute I trusted and I enrolled at Pima Medical's Mesa Campus. The Nursing program was challenging and intense, pushing me to grow and become accountable for patient care. Through diverse clinical experiences, I gravitated towards ER and ICU settings. I've recently accepted a position at OBS Banner Dessert, aiming to transfer to the ICU and eventually join the trauma team. I am immensely grateful for my education at Pima Medical. The Phlebotomy program provided a crucial foundation, giving me the framework I needed for a career in the medical field. I invited Miss Denise to my nursing pinning ceremony and my dad told her COVID had been difficult for me and she had saved my life. He was right, Pima Medical Institute truly changed my life.

In 2005, while browsing technical programs online, Pima Medical Institute's Veterinary Assistant (VA) Program caught my eye. I filled out a request for more information and, to my surprise, Niki Riggleman, a recently retired yet highly esteemed instructor, called me immediately. Despite never having had an interest in veterinary medicine before, that call changed my life. I can't imagine being in any other field today and I'm so grateful Niki called me! I completed the VA Program and returned to complete the Veterinary Technician (VT) Program in 2007. It was a privilege to be part of the very first VT class at the Seattle Campus. One aspect of Pima Medical I truly appreciated was its accessibility; the ability to attend night classes and work during the day allowed me to maintain a steady income while pursuing my education. The hands-on classroom experience, combined with working in the field, was crucial to my professional growth. My journey with VCA Animal Hospitals began with my first externship, where I was hired even before completing it. Almost 20 years later, I'm still with VCA and grateful to have found my place there. I worked as a VA, a VT and then quickly moved up to Technician Supervisor and a regional training role. In 2020, I became the Regional Technician Director for the Northwest & Hawaii Group, supporting veterinary teams across five states. Additionally, as the current President of the Washington State Association of Veterinary Technicians (WSAVT) and a former District Chair for the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), I am dedicated to improving the careers of Veterinary Technicians and Assistants. Ensuring their optimal utilization and safety is crucial to our profession, helping us continue to serve our patients effectively.

I was looking for a change from my previous jobs in food service and explored various community colleges in Seattle. After considering culinary arts, I decided to pursue a healthcare career where I knew jobs were more in demand. I chose Pima Medical Institute because the stories from previous graduates resonated with me. They were just like me, seeking change and career advancement. Despite having no prior knowledge or experience in pharmacy, I chose the Pharmacy Technician program to challenge myself. My experience at Pima Medical was fun and engaging. The courses, from Career Prep to the Pharmacy Technician classes, were well planned. I learned everything I needed to succeed. The biggest challenge was balancing homework and projects with a full-time job, but it was worth it. The support from the staff at Pima's Renton campus was invaluable. The admissions and financial aid advisors helped me with my FAFSA, easing my financial worries. My Career Prep instructor made learning exciting and engaging. The staff provided support and organized stress-relieving activities like the Halloween costume contest. My instructor imparted all the pharmacy knowledge I needed and now apply daily in my work. Since graduating from Pima Medical in 2018, I worked at ReadyMeds for nearly four years and I've spent the last several years working as a Specialty Pharmacy Technician at Kaiser Permanente of Washington. I highly recommend Pima Medical Institute for the support and programs they offer to help you achieve your goals and succeed in your career.
