Growing up, I always wanted to become a police officer, so when I turned 18, I signed up for an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) course. My plan was to get experience and improve my resume so that I could get into the police department, but I fell in love with emergency medicine during that course. I realized there was nothing more I wanted to do with my life than become a paramedic firefighter.
Upon the recommendation of a friend who had gone through Pima Medical Institute's Paramedic program, I enrolled in the program. On the first day, I remember feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work that would be required, but my instructors were fantastic, and they helped us all along the way. It's a challenging and stressful program, but it is also a lot of fun and worth it! My classmates and I became great friends, and our class almost felt like one big, dysfunctional, happy family.
I was nervous at the beginning but learned so much and had great experiences during my clinical and field experiences. The whole EMS community is very small and supportive, and it's a great profession to be in. PMI has a really good reputation in the community and has does a great job preparing students like me for the paramedic field.

My wife, a nurse for 12 years, always encouraged me to join the medical field, but I kept putting it off. I worked as an insurance adjuster, traveling to areas hit by natural disasters, often being gone for 21 days at a time. With young children and older kids involved in activities, I was missing too much. One day, I told my wife I was ready to resign and pursue a medical career at the end of the year. Just a week later, I was let go from my job. We actually laughed at the timing. At the same time, my grandmother began having health problems. Caring for her made me realize the urgency of getting into the medical field-not just for my career, but to better understand her needs. My best friend had gone through Pima Medical's Practical Nursing (PN) program and had encouraged me to join him, but I wasn't ready then. Now, I knew it was the right choice and the right timing.
The PN program was very challenging for me, but I developed a strong small group of classmates who supported me and I had caring instructors who offered extra help. However, when my dear grandmother passed away on Christmas Eve, I was crushed. She had raised me and was my biggest cheerleader and I just wanted to quit. I arranged to meet with my director to withdraw from the program, but she encouraged me to stay. My wife reminded me why I had started the program, and decided to continue. I completed the PN program but still struggling with the loss, I failed my NCLEX exam twice. I felt so defeated, but I knew I couldn't give up. After passing on my third attempt, I drove to Pima Medical to hug my program director and we shared an emotional moment.
I am excited for my new career at the Center at Lowry, a rehabilitation facility where I did clinicals. I can't thank Pima Medical Institute enough; the instructors, especially Director Risner, were amazing and I wouldn't be where I am without them!

I'd been out of the workforce for many years as an at home mom. I knew the job market was tough and I would need a skill to return. I wasn't sure what direction to head, but I knew all those times I'd sat in doctor's offices with my daughter, I would watch their employees and think -- I'd really like to do that.
I did my research and found Pima had an excellent reputation. As soon as I met with the admission's counselor, I knew I was at the right school. I originally signed up for the Medical Administrative Assistant program. But when I was in my career prep class, I kept seeing this parade of really happy students and a really kind instructor who always greeted me in the hall. My curiosity got the best of me and during one of my breaks I talked to that instructor and found out she taught the Dental Assistant Program. She invited me to observe a class and as soon as I watched her hands on class, I knew I wanted to be a Dental Assistant. I switched to the DA program immediately and loved it!
Pima is a wonderful school and has great instructors. I can't say one bad thing about my instructor, Ms Lewis. She was just amazing! After my externship, I heard Pima was opening a Dental Hygiene Clinic and needed a Dental Assistant. I was able to transition from a PMI student to a PMI employee! I'm currently working with equipment and supplies, but am hoping we'll able to add restoratives and I'll be able to work with the dentist in the future. I love working with PMI students and hope to work here for a long time.

I was a stay at home mom for 18 years. When my oldest child headed to college I felt like I had lost my identity and purpose, but I just wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I knew I didn't want to be behind a desk and I enjoyed being on my feet and using my hands. So when I saw the commercial for the Dental Assisting Program and Pima Medical Institute, I decided it might be a fit for me.
It was somewhat intimidating going back to school when I was the oldest student in the class and it was certainly challenging having homework again while balancing family and home life. But, my instructor was helpful and cheered me on.
I felt very prepared, although extremely nervous, for my hands on externship experience. But I learned so much and it helped me understand that I really wanted to work in a specialty area of dentistry. I was initially hired at a general practice but soon found the place I really belonged; a periodontist office. I absolutely love it! I enjoy meeting and getting to know my patients. I have great coworkers and wonderful doctors who continue to teach me about their specialty. I love it all and am so happy!
Pima Medical has been so good in helping me go from "what's my purpose?" to "this is where I should be!" Finding that out and being happy where I am has been everything. It has done so much for me! Plus, my kids are really proud of me.

Which program did you complete and what made you decide to continue your education online?
I completed the Associate of Applied Science in Health Care Administration and Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration online programs. I have always wanted to further my education. I was a teen mom and went into the Pharmacy Technician program because it was quick and what I needed at the time to be able to provide for my family. As time went on, I procrastinated going back to school because I was afraid I was getting older and wouldn't be successful. But, after I started working at PMI, I watched so many students, with so many situations, barriers and fears conquer their goals and dreams. It was, and still is, truly inspiring. I felt I needed to practice what I was telling and encouraging my students to do. I wanted to show them that no matter what happens, with hard work and dedication, you can overcome any obstacle.
What made you choose PMI's program?
I chose PMI's programs because of the incredible reputation of the online programs, the ability to transfer my existing credits, and the flexibility the programs offered to be able to continue working full-time and go to school. Also, I wanted to be able to give my students a first-hand, personal experience for the programs. I feel this provides the students with a very detailed aspect of each program and gives them the tools, information and prospective needed to make their decisions on continuing their education.
What was it like to manage a full-time position and your course load?
I completed both programs back-to-back and I would highly recommend this. I felt this was a huge part of my success when transitioning into the bachelor's program because everything from the associate program was still fresh. I work full-time as the Lead Pharmacy Technician Instructor and I am a very busy mom of four amazing children. The structure of the online courses is tailored for the working individual. I was able to continue working full-time, chauffeur all of my children to and from school and activities, spend time with my family and complete all of my assignments for the programs. It does take time management and organizational skills, but something as simple as creating a calendar with your entire due dates easily keeps you on track.

Did you feel like the coursework was practical for your profession?
I feel that the programs have increased my knowledge, critical thinking skills, team work abilities and leadership qualities. These are only a few of the many essential skills I have acquired through this online program.
Would you encourage others to continue their education and would you recommend this program?
Yes! There is never going to be the "perfect" time to further your education. In reality, 12 months and 15 months are not very long! You would be surprised how quickly each program flies by. I would definitely recommend both HCA programs. PMI gives you all of the tools you need to be successful. All of the instructors were committed and dedicated to my success. This makes a world of difference!

I was a physical therapist assistant looking to further my physical therapy knowledge when I received a mailing about Pima Medical Institute's Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapist Assistant online program. Returning to school after being out for 25 years was an adjustment. It was difficult to organize my time and prioritizing time specifically for school and studying, but I had a great experience as a student. During the program I had a death in my family and was dealing with chronic migraines, but my instructors were very understanding and helped me push through and finish strong.
Soon after completing my bachelor's, I accepted a part-time faculty position at Lehigh Carbon Community College's physical therapist assistant program while continuing to work per diem as a physical therapist assistant. I furthered my education with a master's degree in healthcare education from Washburn University and I am currently enrolled at A.T. Still University's doctorate program in healthcare education. My future goals are to become full-time faculty or obtain an administrative position.
I really appreciated Pima Medical's bachelor's program. The courses were very inclusive and helped prepare me for my master and doctorate programs. I was working at ATI Physical Therapy as a PT Technician and struggling to get into Physical Therapy school. I heard good things about Pima Medical Institute's Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program through some of my coworkers who had attended the program, so I decided to give it a try and enrolled. I had already obtained my bachelor's degree in Physiology from the University of Arizona, so I had a good foundation. This didn't mean the PTA program was easy, as the curriculum goes into considerable depth and the teachers expected true understanding of the topics. My instructors really pressed the "why" behind everything we did. This gave us the tools to be able to accurately perform proper interventions and gave us a foundation to be able to answer patient's questions with accuracy.
After graduation, I was able to continue working at ATI and transition to a Physical Therapist Assistant position. After the first year, I knew I wanted to be in a leadership position and underwent training for another year. I'm proud to say, I was recently promoted to the Clinical Director at our north Tucson ATI location.
I just want to thank my instructors for driving us to be the best clinicians that we could be and giving us that foundation to excel. I would 100% recommend Pima Medical Institute's PTA program. It is a quality program with quality instructors.

After moving from Texas to Colorado for a fresh start, I was determined to build a stable career in the medical field. Research led me to Pima Medical Institute, and from the moment I began speaking with admissions, I knew it was the right choice. Despite facing many challenges, I embarked on the Medical Assistant (MA) program with unwavering determination.
I started living in my car three weeks after starting the MA program. I was juggling homelessness, school and a full-time job. I struggled finding safe places to park, hot and cold nights, and finding time between work and school to do homework, sleep and get to the gym to take showers. I found incredible support from caring and understanding instructors who became like family to me. They provided resources and encouragement, helping me navigate the toughest moments. As difficult as my situation was, school was my biggest motivation and the people at Pima Medical were my support and prepared me for my future. Thanks to great instructors and comprehensive training, I excelled at my externship at Advanced Urgent Care, impressing my supervisors enough to secure a job offer before even graduating.

After being a truck driver and construction worker for 20 plus years, I made a promise to my mother before she died that I would go back to school. For nearly five years I passed Pima Medical Institute on my daily drive, and finally found the courage to pull in and take the pretest for the Nursing program. Going back to school at age 50 was scary, but I loved the atmosphere, the instructors and my classmates at Pima Medical. The instructors did an exceptional and extraordinary job preparing us for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
I applied at Banner Desert in Mesa where I had completed my clinicals and I was hired. It was 2019, and I was immediately thrown into the COVID Pandemic. A year later I decided to become a traveling nurse. Initially, I worried I might not be qualified enough or have enough experience, but I quickly got over that. Every place is different, but most of the core staff really appreciates the relief that travelers provide. I have been to 10 different places in four years. I'm considered a Banner Staffing Traveler within the Banner facilities nationwide and I call Banner Tucson my home, as it is where I spend the most time. Some of the challenges of being a traveler are finding a place to live and being away from family and friends. But, I am getting experience and confidence in different facilities and becoming more adaptable and flexible in my career. Plus, I am making a great salary.

After twelve-plus years as a personal trainer, I found myself needing a job with benefits like a 401K and insurance, so I transitioned to a desk job. However, I was miserable and knew I needed a career that left me feeling fulfilled. I reevaluated my passions and realized I still loved working with bodies and physical health. A co-worker who had attended Pima Medical Institute for the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program encouraged me to consider it. After researching and learning about the program, I decided to go back to school. Despite my experience, I wasn't initially accepted into the PTA program. Crushed but determined, I quit my desk job and worked as a rehab tech at an assisted living facility for a year. When I reapplied, I was accepted and I set a goal to graduate with honors.
At 39, I was older than most of my classmates, but I felt more prepared for the professional aspects. My instructors were great clinicians and I was able to learn and draw on their experiences. My clinicals were challenging, especially when COVID hit, causing disruptions. Despite the added stress, our instructors ensured we gained the necessary practical experience. After graduation, I worked at a skilled nursing facility, which I enjoyed, but quickly experienced burnout. I accepted a Physical Therapist Assistant position at Rocky Mountain Physical Therapy, where I have been thriving. In fact, a year ago I was promoted to Clinic Director. I love my job, my patients and the challenges of managing the clinic.
As a clinical instructor, I work with Pima Medical students, drawing on my experiences to engage them in hands-on learning. I'm proud to have graduated with honors and have even inspired a former client of mine to enroll in Pima Medical's Respiratory Therapy program. Now, both of us are medical professionals making a difference in people's lives. It's incredibly fulfilling!

In 2005, while browsing technical programs online, Pima Medical Institute's Veterinary Assistant (VA) Program caught my eye. I filled out a request for more information and, to my surprise, Niki Riggleman, a recently retired yet highly esteemed instructor, called me immediately. Despite never having had an interest in veterinary medicine before, that call changed my life. I can't imagine being in any other field today and I'm so grateful Niki called me!
I completed the VA Program and returned to complete the Veterinary Technician (VT) Program in 2007. It was a privilege to be part of the very first VT class at the Seattle Campus. One aspect of Pima Medical I truly appreciated was its accessibility; the ability to attend night classes and work during the day allowed me to maintain a steady income while pursuing my education. The hands-on classroom experience, combined with working in the field, was crucial to my professional growth.
My journey with VCA Animal Hospitals began with my first externship, where I was hired even before completing it. Almost 20 years later, I'm still with VCA and grateful to have found my place there. I worked as a VA, a VT and then quickly moved up to Technician Supervisor and a regional training role. In 2020, I became the Regional Technician Director for the Northwest & Hawaii Group, supporting veterinary teams across five states. Additionally, as the current President of the Washington State Association of Veterinary Technicians (WSAVT) and a former District Chair for the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA), I am dedicated to improving the careers of Veterinary Technicians and Assistants. Ensuring their optimal utilization and safety is crucial to our profession, helping us continue to serve our patients effectively.

After high school, I spent four years juggling two jobs-one at Office Max and the other at a bakery-when one day, my aunt called and asked if I wanted to go back to school with her. I had no idea what she meant, but I agreed. That's how I found Pima Medical Institute. I chose the Medical Assistant (MA) program because, when my dad was ill, I saw firsthand the impact healthcare professionals can have on a person's life. I wanted to do that too, and the program was only nine months long, which made it a perfect fit for me.
I loved every minute of the MA program! The hands-on training felt so different from high school, and I found myself excited to learn. In particular, I discovered I had a passion for injections and blood draws. When it was time for my externship, I was nervous, but my head MA was incredibly supportive, and I quickly found that it all came naturally to me.
Toward the end of the program our homework assignment was to apply for three MA positions. Afterwards, I didn't think much about it, but to my surprise, Saguaro Dermatology called and hired me. Dermatology is fast-paced and challenging, but I love it. My favorite part is working with skin cancers and assisting in surgeries. I also enjoy my role in the lab, processing tissue samples as a histotech.
Since relocating to Tucson, I easily found another dermatology position, and I couldn't be happier. Pima Medical set me on a path I'm truly passionate about, and I'd do it all over again. If you're thinking about a medical career, don't hesitate-come to Pima Medical. You won't regret it!
