Back in 2001 I enrolled in Pima Medical Institute's Medical Assistant Program. I was actually interested in nursing, but I had a young child and I just didn't have time to be on a waiting list. I enjoyed the program and ended up working as a Medical Assistant for 10 years until I felt like I had hit that glass ceiling and I couldn't grow any more. I called PMI to see if they had a next step for me. When I learned about their online Health Care Administration associate's degree program, I got really excited! It was challenging, but I was motivated. My kids were a little older and they understood our life would change for a time while I was working and going to school, so we made it a family affair and we all studied together each night. My classes were really beneficial. They prepared me for leadership and management; skills I need for my current position. Our instructors made the classes practical. For example, we would have class discussions on how to handle patients who were upset. When I finished the program I realized I wanted to keep going, so I continued on and completed PMI's Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration. I am currently employed at Westmed Family Healthcare as their Clinical Supervisor. I would encourage other MAs to continue their education. Combining my years of experience with the online degrees from PMI has opened more doors for me in the healthcare field.
My journey into health care began with an interest in nursing, but I soon realized it didn't align with my personality. A shadowing opportunity in a Radiology department, arranged by my mother, confirmed my passion for radiography. I chose Pima Medical Institute's Radiography associate degree program and had exceptional experience as a student. The program's blend of didactic and clinical training thoroughly prepared me for my career. I viewed each clinical rotation as a job interview, especially my fourth-semester placement. I worked hard to impress the staff by demonstrating the skills I had learned and I earned a job offer at the same hospital, where I continue to work. Currently, I serve as the Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Canyon Vista Medical Center. Since graduating from Pima Medical's Radiography program 13 years ago, I have had the privilege of precepting students from various programs across Arizona and California. Among them, Pima Medical students consistently stand out. They arrive at their first clinical rotation with strong positioning skills and the confidence to image patients of all ages, from pediatrics to geriatrics. Pima Medical not only equipped me with essential skills but also instilled confidence and set me on a path to success.
My high school encouraged us to consider career options and provided the opportunity to shadow a dental assistant at my dentist's office. That experience sealed the deal for me. After graduation, I did some research and signed up for the dental assisting program at PMI. I was the very first student enrolled at the new Aurora Campus. Having the technology of the tablets and all the hands on experience was really helpful. I had a great experience and grew to be very close with both my classmates and instructors. My personal dentist referred me to an excellent office when it was time for my externship. I learned so much during my training and grew to be really close with everyone in the office. As a result of my hard work, the dentist offered me a position and I began working the very next day and within three months I was promoted to their lead assistant. I had become friendly with one of the patients who had experienced the nervousness of my first day. On the last day of my externship he saw me and told me how proud and excited he was to be able to continue to see me during his visits. Making that kind of connection with a patient made me realize I had made the right career choice! I could never thank my PMI instructors enough for preparing me for my new career!
I'd been out of the workforce for many years as an at home mom. I knew the job market was tough and I would need a skill to return. I wasn't sure what direction to head, but I knew all those times I'd sat in doctor's offices with my daughter, I would watch their employees and think -- I'd really like to do that. I did my research and found Pima had an excellent reputation. As soon as I met with the admission's counselor, I knew I was at the right school. I originally signed up for the Medical Administrative Assistant program. But when I was in my career prep class, I kept seeing this parade of really happy students and a really kind instructor who always greeted me in the hall. My curiosity got the best of me and during one of my breaks I talked to that instructor and found out she taught the Dental Assistant Program. She invited me to observe a class and as soon as I watched her hands on class, I knew I wanted to be a Dental Assistant. I switched to the DA program immediately and loved it! Pima is a wonderful school and has great instructors. I can't say one bad thing about my instructor, Ms Lewis. She was just amazing! After my externship, I heard Pima was opening a Dental Hygiene Clinic and needed a Dental Assistant. I was able to transition from a PMI student to a PMI employee! I'm currently working with equipment and supplies, but am hoping we'll able to add restoratives and I'll be able to work with the dentist in the future. I love working with PMI students and hope to work here for a long time.
Prior to coming to Pima Medical Institute, I started a premed degree in North Dakota. After relocating to the Phoenix area, I decided to continue my professional endeavors in the medical field. My research led me to the Radiography program at PMI's Mesa campus. I enjoyed my classes and my externship was completely invaluable! It was the real deal and I was exposed to so much. I was hired by Phoenix Baptist Hospital, one of my clinical sites. Within a few short months I had an opportunity to become a co-clinical instructor and I found myself supervising PMI students! This field allows so much flexibility. I worked in hospital settings and outpatient facilities as well as education and research. During our early years of marriage, my job allowed me opportunities for swing shifts and extra hours. When I began having children, I was able to switch to night shifts to make life work for our family. When I was getting weary of night shifts, I answered an ad on Craig's List for an x-ray tech to sell film and printers. It was a good 'foot in the door' into sales and a year and half later I was approached by Phillips Healthcare, where I have been working for 5 years. I am currently the National VP of Sales for our Mobile Surgery Division and have a team of 13 Modality and Product Specialists reporting to me selling or demonstrating portable surgical imaging equipment throughout the country. I believe Radiography is one of the best fields in medicine. It has changed my life. Little did I know when I entered PMI's Radiography Program where it would lead me? Thank you Pima!
I was active duty military, deployed 3 times, and worked as a surgery technician in the military for 24 years. I've always had a desire to work with animals. So after retiring, I found PMI's Veterinary Technician Program and enrolled. I was really happy with my choice. The classes were small and, although the program is accelerated, they offer lots of hands-on very early in the program and I really appreciated that. To be honest, I was a little cocky coming in because I'd spent all those years in human medicine, but I quickly realized I had much to learn! With human medicine there is only one species, for example, there are so many different parameters for vital signs when working with all different types of animals. I'm so grateful for my instructors. They made me feel comfortable and they believed in me, and I know that was a big part of why I was able to be successful. I was pretty nervous going out on my first externship, but the technicians were patient and really helped me transition and get my hands dirty. Overall, the VT program was very tough, but I did it. I graduated! Completing the Veterinary Technician program was very rewarding and my family is so proud of me!
While facing setbacks in my undergraduate BSPS (Bachelors in Science of Pharmaceutical Science) program due to grade issues, I decided to step away. My advisor from the University of Arizona (UA) suggested I apply to Pima Medical Institute's Pharmacy Technician program. From the moment I stepped into the program, I knew I was in the right place. I had wonderful instructors to help guide me on the path of reaching my goal. I enjoyed meeting new and different people, each with their own unique story. Probably the biggest obstacle I faced was the poor performance that was lingering from my time at UA and wanting to show that I wasn't the reason for not doing well there. I'm proud to say I cleared that hurdle and finished my program with a 4.0 GPA. One of the most invaluable aspects of Pima Medical was the accessibility of instructors for one-on-one guidance and always knowing I could easily ask questions and get help. This bolstered my confidence during my externship, enabling me to be comfortable with my colleagues and have the confidence to ask questions. I was thrilled to receive a job offer from Banner University Medical Center Tucson. My time there as an extern showcased my capabilities, earning me a position as a Certified Pharmacy Technician. I owe immense gratitude to my instructors Shaun, Sara and Grace for their unwavering support and dedication to my success. Pima Medical Institute is able to offer opportunities to those that believe they don't deserve it, when in reality they do!
After being a truck driver and construction worker for 20 plus years, I made a promise to my mother before she died that I would go back to school. For nearly five years I passed Pima Medical Institute on my daily drive, and finally found the courage to pull in and take the pretest for the Nursing program. Going back to school at age 50 was scary, but I loved the atmosphere, the instructors and my classmates at Pima Medical. The instructors did an exceptional and extraordinary job preparing us for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). I applied at Banner Desert in Mesa where I had completed my clinicals and I was hired. It was 2019, and I was immediately thrown into the COVID Pandemic. A year later I decided to become a traveling nurse. Initially, I worried I might not be qualified enough or have enough experience, but I quickly got over that. Every place is different, but most of the core staff really appreciates the relief that travelers provide. I have been to 10 different places in four years. I'm considered a Banner Staffing Traveler within the Banner facilities nationwide and I call Banner Tucson my home, as it is where I spend the most time. Some of the challenges of being a traveler are finding a place to live and being away from family and friends. But, I am getting experience and confidence in different facilities and becoming more adaptable and flexible in my career. Plus, I am making a great salary. Pima Medical Institute changed my life forever. I made some lifelong friends during my experience, I had some incredible, humble, giving and caring instructors and I am truly grateful!
After 12 years working primarily as a public health nurse at a Federally Qualified Health Center (BQHC) serving medically underserved populations, I became a supervisor at the Florida Department of Health. It was then that I realized that I needed to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) to remain competitive in the job market. When I changed jobs, my new employer offered a deal I couldn't pass up; a FREE RN to BSN program, with the only contingency being that I remain with them 12 months after my degree attainment. I was initially accepted at a much larger and well-known university for an online Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, but the communication between myself and their recruiters left a lot to be desired, and as an older student who had never taken online classes, it spooked me. I searched and found Pima Medical Institute's online BSN program. I applied and was immediately welcomed by a veritable squad of people helping ease my fears and walk me through a new-to-me online educational experience. The director even called me personally to ensure the program fit my needs for maximum success. I graduated with a 3.9 GPA this past May, and I couldn't praise my professors or fellow students more! I had access to kind and helpful staff even at odd hours, and it has helped me become so much more confident in my current practice. My positive educational experience at Pima Medical has me seriously considering the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) online program. This is something that was never on my radar before and I know I would only want to tackle this goal with Pima Medical Institute.
When I got braces in high school, I was fascinated by how something so simple could transform a person's smile-and their confidence. That experience sparked my interest in the dental field, and after researching options, I found Pima Medical Institute's Dental Assistant (DA) program. I enrolled right after high school and jumped into the program. My instructors were incredible! I never considered myself a standout student, but the hands-on learning style was perfect for me. I learned so much, and when it came time for my externship, it felt like a breeze because I was so prepared. They even offered me a job as soon as I finished, and I worked there happily until I moved out of state. Since graduating in 2011, I've worked in every part of a dental office-from assisting to managing the front desk to being an office manager. Today, I'm a mom of two fast-growing kids, and I want more flexibility to be with them, so I'm going back to school for billing and coding. This will allow me to continue working in the dental field from home. I love the dental field because I get to make a difference-helping patients find relief from pain or transforming their smiles - and I'm excited about the next chapter in my dental career. Pima Medical is an amazing place with caring instructors and I would choose it all over again. It's changed my life.
After running a travel agency for fifteen years, I began searching for a new career in the medical field. I'd always been interested in photography, so radiology seemed like a natural fit. At 43, I returned to school to earn my associate degree in Radiologic Science. I gained experience working at a regional hospital in Minnesota, learning X-ray, CT, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine. Then in 2014, my husband and I, looking to fulfill our dream, moved to Alaska where I became a multi-modality technologist with Providence in Seward. Eventually, I stepped into the role of Diagnostic Imaging Supervisor, leading a $1.8 million department remodel to improve patient care. Upgrading our equipment to include a new CT scanner and digital X-ray systems has enabled us to offer year-round mammography, allowing for earlier breast cancer detection and better outcomes. In 2023, my love for learning led me to Pima Medical Institute, where I completed my Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Science (BSRS) online. Graduating with honors was a major accomplishment. I was especially impressed with the instructors and the quality of education at Pima Medical, and I'm proud to be a graduate. We are a critical care access hospital that sees patients from around the world. Tourists visit our community for various reasons, such as sport fishing, sightseeing, mountain hiking, mountain biking and cruise ships. This year we had ninety-six cruise ships bringing thousands of passengers on and off the ship. In my role, I often meet patients on one of the toughest days of their lives. My goal is to make a difference for them. I'm grateful for the skills and support from Pima Medical that has allowed me to provide the best care possible.
Starting over in a new career later in life was daunting, but my passion for healthcare pushed me forward. I initially enrolled at a local community college to complete prerequisites for a nursing program, only to face a two-year waitlist. Determined to find a quicker path into the medical field, I discovered Pima Medical Institute's Phlebotomy program. This program's accelerated timeline was perfect for my busy life as a stay-at-home mother. In less than three months I gained essential skills and secured a job in the medical field. That first step ignited my passion for healthcare, and after gaining experience as a phlebotomist and clinical lab assistant, I returned to Pima Medical for the 22-month Respiratory Therapy program. My journey wasn't without challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted my class's clinical rotations, forcing us to transition to remote learning. Balancing studies, work, and family was overwhelming, but I learned to manage my time effectively and prioritize self-care. The instructors, many of whom were industry professionals, provided valuable insights and hands-on learning experiences that prepared me for real-world healthcare settings. As a result of my education, I secured a position at Banner Desert Medical Center, where I have been employed for the past eight years. During the pandemic, I practiced respiratory care under an emergency license, which provided me with critical experience in a high-pressure environment. Currently, I am working in Procurement and have recently been promoted to Test Management Training Coordinator. In this role, I oversee the training processes for new hires, externships, and existing staff members. I am incredibly grateful to my instructors at Pima Medical for their dedication and support. The comprehensive curriculum and hands-on training prepared me for a fulfilling career.
